August 2021 - Ways to Take Action

Below are 3 suggestions of actions you can take in August to support progressive movements locally, nationally, and internationally.

  1. End Toronto’s Violent Encampment Evictions

    • The City of Toronto has deployed hundreds of police officers and private security to evict people experiencing homelessness from city parks with no real plan to house them. We need to support not harm our community members in encampments!

    • ACTIONS:

      • Call the mayor at (416) 397-2489 and tell him to end the violent encampment evictions!

      • Call your city councillor (find yours here)

      • Follow @esn.to.4real

  2. Recognizing the Deaths of Over 1794 Indigenous Children

    • There have been many, many children discovered at residential school sites across what is currently known as Canada. There will be many more, as this work continues we need to take ongoing action.

    • ACTIONS:

      • Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action (here)

      • Follow @wetsuweten_checkpoint

      • Take the free UofA course Indigenous Canada (here)

  3. Support for LBGTQ+ Ghanaians

    • The attack on LGBTQ+ people in Ghana continues. Lawmakers in Ghana are now seeking to make it a crime to identify as LGBTQ+ or advocate for their rights.

    • ACTIONS:

      • Follow @LGBTRightsGhana

      • Make a donation to them here

      • Send an email to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (marc.garneau@parl.gc.ca) asking him to speak out in support of LGBTQ+ Ghanaians
